The nation's impressive new West African Art Museum (Mowaa) has found itself in the center of local power politics during the week it was supposed to – but was unable – to begin operations to the visitors for the very first time.

The Grand Vision

The 15-acre facility stands in the core of Benin's urban center, administrative center of the southern state of Edo – and features an excavation site and facilities created by high-profile dual heritage architect Sir David Adjaye, most famous for the Washington African American Museum that began operations in Washington in 2016.

It has been half a decade in the making – and is planned to showcase both the heritage and the current era of creativity in the region known for the historic artworks, historical pieces looted from the king's palace by UK forces in the 1800s.

Readiness and Potential

It is remarkable – and before the anticipated opening, Mowaa was energetic with staff committed to show it is a venue that can rival well-known cultural centers in the Europe and America.

Internally conservators precisely revealed cultural items from secure wrapping, examining each item and taking meticulous records before placing them on display surfaces and plinths.

Experts adjusted climate control systems. In the materials science laboratory, officers calibrated devices designed to maintain centuries-old artefacts.

Investment and Economic Plans

The project has been the idea of businessman Phillip Ihenacho – presently Mowaa's managing director.

"I want us to have a significant economic impact on communities in the vicinity," he told the press, noting that he hoped to make the city "a tourism center."

Mowaa, a not-for-profit national foundation, aims at creating more than 30,000 employment opportunities and contributing over $80m per year to the area arts sector through collaborations and events.

Investment and Administrative Problems

It has required $25m to get here – capital gathered from different supporters, including the European governments, the UK museum and the Edo state government.

But at present the state authorities has withdrawn support from beneath it – revoking the occupancy of the site on which the building was erected.

An Edo state spokesperson explained this was because in the initial documents it had called itself EMOWAA – and it had since dropped "Edo" from its name.

Unrest and Official Response

This declaration followed demonstrations on recently, when people stormed the facility calling for it be designated the Benin Royal Museum.

A disruptive assembly confronted overseas dignitaries at the museum ahead of the launch – forcing them to be escorted out under police escort.

President Bola Tinubu has even stepped in to try and resolve the dispute, establishing a special task force to address the controversy.

Political Complexities

But why has this turned into so divisive – and such a public relations crisis?

Much of it comes down to internal conflicts at a regional government level, as it was Edo's previous governor Godwin Obaseki – whose term in office ended recently – who was a primary advocate of the project.

And it appears the government of the recently elected official, a key associate of the area king, known as the royal figure, may want greater involvement in the project. The activists on the weekend, for instance, were calling for that the facility be put under the control of Oba Ewuare II.

The Benin Bronzes Controversy

This emphasizes the controversial matter of the Benin Bronzes, one of Africa's most celebrated artistic heritage.

Because though the facility does finally begin operations, these bronzes will be clearly not present.

They are brass, ivory and wooden artworks that once embellished the king's residence of the Benin Kingdom before UK forces looted them in the late nineteenth century during a military operation.

Currently, many stay distributed across museums in Europe and North America -- including the London museum, German museum and the New York institution.

Repatriation Campaigns

Their return has become one of the most disputed conversations in the global art world. About 150 have currently made their way home – and additional are due to follow.

When proposals for the museum in the city were initially revealed in recent years, the influential figures on Nigeria's art scene hoped it would become their ideal location – a modern campus to show them off to the global audience.

But the issues became confused recently after the federal government stated that the traditional ruler would be the proper guardian of repatriated artifacts – and the royal household campaigned for a institution under the royal family's direct control, against the preferences of the ex-leader.
