European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
