Crew Member Reveals Depression After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured experts in various fields.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
